Humans of MUSC: Vanessa Kwan
In this instalment of Humans of MUSC we talk to the current captain of the State 4 women’s squad Vanessa Kwan.
Can you introduce yourself please?
Hey! I’m Vanessa and I’m from Singapore. I moved to Melbourne in mid 2017 to further my studies at Melbourne University. It has been a brilliant experience so far and joining MUSC has made it even better!
Why did you choose to play at the Melbourne University Soccer Club?
Naturally, studying at Melbourne University, I just wanted to play for the same University and make new friends.
What do you feel are the main benefits of playing at MUSC?
Diversity and inclusiveness. As a player-run club, it is fantastic to see players stepping up into the committee and making the MUSC experience positive. Everyone has been really welcoming since I first joined in 2018, and I constantly receive support from coaches and players within the club. Its been great to develop new friendships throughout the season. You simply put your differences aside, meet new people and play good football together.
Has there been a favourite season at MUSC, if so why?
Honestly its only my second season with the club, but I have to say the first season was memorable!
What about your current involvement in the soccer club?
I decided to contribute to the club who has made my uni life much more enjoyable, and for this season, I am part of the registrations team who assist with registering all players for the season. Having the opportunity to learn from a great bunch from the women’s committee and the registrations team was an added bonus.
I am also honoured to be voted captain for this season, hopefully I am able to help the team as much as they helped me last season.
Has there been a standout coach at MUSC? (and) the best player you have played alongside at MUSC?
My coaches are mostly the same from last season and they are all great in their own ways. Its hard to pick a standout. Likewise, all the players I’ve played with are really great on and off the pitch. They (coaches and players) have a really positive attitude towards almost everything and have made a positive impact towards my development.
Besides sports, do you have any other hobbies or passions?
I have a huge interest in music since young and picked up the guitar about 6 years ago. I also enjoy hiking and love food (I mean who doesn’t?!).
Have you been a part of the Uni Nationals team? If so, please describe the highlight. Would you recommend it to potential students?
Yeah, I was part of the Uni Nationals team in 2018 who finished as runners-up. I am still thankful for the opportunity to join the team and I learnt so much in 5 days. Be it on or off the field, everyone showed great character and perseverance throughout a tedious week with back-to-back games. We have all learnt so much from one another, and I would definitely recommend it to potential students! This experience was definitely the highlight of my uni life so far!
Sounds like an unforgettable experience … Thanks so much for sharing Vanessa and I am sure you will lead your team to great success this season!
