Team of the Decade: Keryn Walters
The first player entered into our Women’s Team of the Decade is forward Keryn Walters.
‘The Talented Walters’ was printed in a local newspaper article back in 2014, and who would argue such a title for Keryn? That Keryn was the first player on the list for team of the decade is testament to her memorable and continued impact for the State 1 team.
Some highlights include 2014 where not only did Keryn top score and win the Best & Fairest for State 1; she won top goal scorer for the league and was named the League’s Best & Fairest. All this with the team finishing third in arguably the toughest iteration of State League 1 in this decade.
As if this isn’t impressive enough, Keryn actually had scored even more goals in 2012 (24) along with being named Best & Fairest for the State 1 team.
Her outstanding contribution to the club over the 2010 – 2019 decade has seen her take the top goal scorer accolade in 6 of the 7 seasons she played in during this time. Keryn’s contribution continues into the current decade, and it began long before the start of the last.
Keryn’s quiet passion to reach these levels of achievement are set on a foundation of commitment to the high expectations she sets for herself and her teammates, along with a drive to continued learning and improvement. In the moment she has an ability to block out all the distraction or pressure around her to send a calm, measured shot into the bottom corner, or the people’s favourite – to leap above all others to score spectacular header goals from corner kicks.
Keryn Walters is a player we’ve all loved to watch over the years, from on field as a teammate to spectating from the sidelines. When Keryn is on the pitch you can almost always feel that something special is going to happen! It’s an absolute delight to announce Keryn Walters on the team of the decade.
Congratulations Keryn!
