MUSC recognised at Melbourne University Sport Awards
Melbourne University Soccer Club was recognised for our contributions on and off the pitch at the 2023 Melbourne University Sport end of year Sport and Volunteer Celebration.
The club received an Award for Excellence in Inclusion for the All Gender Games. AGGS is a fluid format soccer series made for queer, trans and gender diverse people. In 2023, MUSC ran a second iteration of the games, with support from Melbourne University Sport and Football Victoria. You can read more about AGGS in the photo essay by games coordinator Cat Hoang, published in collaboration with ABC and Siren Sport.
Club president Michael Owen was recognised for his immense contributions to the club as a recipient of the Distinguished Service Award. To be eligible for nomination for the DSA, members must have been at their respective clubs for 10 or more years.
The Distinguished Service Award recognises Michael’s contributions over the past twenty years at MUSC. These achievements include:
- His leadership roles on the Board, as President since 2016 as well as his position on the MU Sport Clubs Advisory group;
- His on-field contributions to numerous championship winning sides;
- His advocacy for greater diversity, inclusion and gender equity at the club, including leading the 2020 constutitional reform and establishing fit-for-purpose governance structures; and
- The countless hours spent on the operational requirements of running the state’s biggest senior soccer club, with Michael’s efforts spanning software development, registrations, events, matchday, and financial management.
We could go on, but for those who have had the pleasure of working and playing alongside Michael at MUSC, his receipt of the Distinguished Service Award goes without question.
Congratulations to award winners from Melbourne University’s clubs, and a big thank you to our members for another fantastic season and to Melbourne University Sport for their support over the year.
